Roy Mustang is a 5-star Fire Mage built around his Flame Alchemist stance and a Fighting Spirit resource he starts every battle with. His single-target flame skill always pushes his own Combat Readiness, and while in the Flame Alchemist stance it upgrades into Heat Wave, a harder hit that ignores 50% of the target's Defense and pushes him another 30% toward an extra turn. His all-enemy barrage refreshes the stance and hits harder the fewer enemies remain, so he scales up as a fight thins out. His passive gives him a guaranteed opening tempo lead and caps the damage he can take in any single hit to a fraction of his max Health, making him hard to delete with one burst.

Counters

  • Single-target burst threats and one-shot openers — His passive caps the damage he can suffer in any one attack to a set fraction of max Health, so even an enemy nuker who would normally delete him in a single hit cannot, letting him survive the opening exchange and answer back.
  • High-Defense bruisers and tanks — His upgraded Heat Wave penetrates 50% of the target's Defense, so the chunky frontline units that shrug off normal damage take heavy hits from him anyway.
  • Slower or evenly-matched teams in the speed race — He starts with a full resource and the Flame Alchemist stance from turn one, and every flame skill pushes his own Combat Readiness (15% or 30%), so he chains turns and seizes the tempo before slower lineups can set up.
  • Stacked, full enemy lines — His all-enemy flame barrage hits every target at once and refreshes his stance, giving him a strong opening sweep against a fresh five-unit team before it scales further as their numbers drop.

Countered by

  • Buff strip and dispel — His spikes depend on the Flame Alchemist stance and his attack buff; the attack buff can be dispelled or stolen, but the Flame Alchemist stance is undispellable, so race the window instead of trying to remove it.
  • Buff-duration reduction — Cutting the duration of his self-granted buffs erodes the Flame Alchemist stance he relies on, forcing him to spend turns re-applying it instead of pressing his advantage.
  • Sustained chip and prolonged fights — His passive only caps damage per individual hit, not total incoming damage, so foes that grind him down through many smaller hits or damage-over-time bypass the cap and wear him out.
  • Burst targeting his allies instead of him — The single-hit damage cap protects only Roy; an enemy that ignores him and bursts down his more fragile teammates undercuts the team before his tempo lead matters.
