Ervalen is a 5-star Earth Thief built around dueling one enemy at a time, with no passive skill to lean on. His basic attack rapidly strikes a single target with a chance to lower its Defense, while Sword of Hatred and his ultimate, Heir to the Throne, both scale up the more the target's max Health exceeds his own, granting him up to 30% Combat Readiness and up to 70% bonus damage against bulky foes. Heir to the Throne also gives him counterattack and an Attack-based barrier for two turns, and finishing off the enemy with it extends his buffs by a turn and hands him an extra turn, letting a clean kill snowball into chained burst.

Counters

  • High-health bruisers and tanks — His second and third skills both grow stronger the more the target's max Health exceeds his own: Sword of Hatred hands him up to 30% Combat Readiness against a bigger health pool, and Heir to the Throne deals up to 70% bonus damage to it. The fatter the enemy frontline, the harder he punches and the faster he turns.
  • Targets he can finish off — Killing an enemy with Heir to the Throne extends his own buff durations by a turn and immediately grants an extra turn, so a clean kill snowballs into chained burst. He shines at sniping a softened or isolated single target rather than trading evenly.
  • Defense-reliant single targets — Vengeance has a chance to decrease Defense for two turns, softening one enemy so his own follow-up hits, or an ally's, land for far more.
  • Attackers who rely on hitting him — Heir to the Throne grants him counterattack and an Attack-based barrier for two turns, so enemies who keep striking him eat retaliation while the shield absorbs their damage.

Countered by

  • Counterattack denial — His third skill leans on the counterattack buff to punish attackers; effects that stop counters from triggering switch off that retaliation entirely and let foes hit him for free.
  • Cleanse and dispel — His pressure depends on the Defense break he applies and on his self-granted counterattack and barrier. Removing the Defense break off the enemy, or stripping his counter and shield, defangs both his offense and his defense.
  • Immunity — His only debuff is the Defense decrease on Vengeance. An enemy under immunity simply ignores it, so against a protected target he is left with raw single-target damage and nothing to soften them.
  • Wide pressure and burst — Every one of his skills hits a single target and he has no passive to fall back on, so he answers one enemy at a time. A team that spreads damage, or that bursts him down before Heir to the Throne grants its barrier and extra turn, gives him nothing to chain off of.
